Prof. Herawati served as Deputy Director of Fundamental Research at the Eijkman Institute (1993–2021). She also led the Forensic DNA Unit and headed as Principal Investigator at the Genome Diversity and Genetic Diseases Unit. She is currently affiliated with the Mochtar Riady Institute for Nanotechnology. Her expertise focusing in human forensic DNA and mitochondrial DNA as genetic markers in Indonesian populations.
