What is DNA paternity testing?
DNA Paternity testing is a DNA test to determine whether a random man (alleged father) is the biological father of a child. DNA Paternity testing provides scientific evidence by comparing an alleged father's DNA profile with a child in question. We highly recommend including the biological Mother if available in the paternity testing to increase the accuracy of the test result.
F.A.Q.
DNA Paternity testing at Genos Laboratory is using 26 genetic DNA markers known as Short Tandem Repeat (STR) units. The DNA profile would be analyzed statistically to provide accurate results. The probability value exceeds 99.99% if the comparison of DNA profiles between an alleged father and a child are matched. This test can also exclude a random man (alleged father) from being the biological father of a child with 100% accuracy.
Generally, the sample used is blood. Blood samples are taken from the vein using a sterile syringe needle with volume less than 1 mL or from the fingertip pricked with a sterile needle (finger prick). Another sample option can be used is buccal swabs collected by gently swabbing the inside of the cheek with a cotton swab. The type of sample does not affect the test results.
1. Father and child
DNA Paternity testing compares an alleged father's DNA profile with a child. It's mandatory to test both parties.
2. Father, mother and child
DNA is a hereditary component, passed from biological parents to their children. One copy from the biological mother, and the other is obtained from the father. Thus, a child has 2 copies of DNA. A Complete paternity examination can determine the biological parents of a child in question. DNA paternity testing typically compares the DNA's profile of a child to the alleged father (random man) and the biological mother. The step of matching the biological mother’s DNA profile to the child’s, before comparing the child’s DNA profile to The alleged father’s can increase the strength of the paternity test result value.
